4. "The well-known poet, Mr. Habib Jalib, has been summoned by a Special Military Court of Multan to appear before it today (the 10th of December). The summons were issued under MLR 13 by the Kotwali Police of Multan. The case was registered against Mr. Habib Jalib on the charge of reciting a poem on the death anniversary of the distinguished poet, Sahir Ludhianvi." From viewpoint (Lahore), Dec. 10, 1981.

5. Professor Christopher Shackle of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, informs us that he is currently compiling "a bibliography of useful titles on Urdu literature in European languages."

This is welcome news. We urge our readers to send him whatever bibliographic information they may have.

6. Professor Shackle also sent us a list of the Ph.D. theses done at the S.O.A.S. on Urdu literature, which we print below.

1. Sayyid Ghulam Muhiuddin Qadri, "A critical history of Urdu language and literature down to the year 1720," 1929.

2. Muhammad Hafiz Syed, "Qazi Mahmud Bahri--a mystic poet of the 12th century A.H., his times, life, and work," 1932.

3. Sayyid Sajjad Husain, "A comparative study of the Nau Tarz i Murassa and a history of Urdu prose from the earliest times down to 1775," 1933.

4. Mian Tasadduque Husain, "Hali as poet, critic, and biographer, and his influence on Urdu literature," 1935.

5. Muhammad Baqir Malik, "The development of Hindustani in its early stages especially as seen in translations and adaptations from Persian," 1939.

6. Syed Safiruddin Bashir Ahmad, "A critical estimate of Insha Allah Khan as poet and grammarian," 1949.

7. Firoz Husain, "The life and work of Ratan Nath Sarshar,' 1964.

8. Mohammad Shamsuddin Siddiqi, "A critical edition of Sauda*s Urdu poetical works excluding the marsiyas," 1967.

9. Khalid Hasan Qadiri, "Hasrat Mohani: a study of his life and poetry," 1971.

10. D. J. Matthews, "Dakani language and literature 1500-1700 A.D.," 1971.

It is unfortunate that this valuable material is not available to scholars outside of London. The S.O.A.S. rules do not allow photo-reduplication of theses without the permission of the author concerned, while, to the best of our knowledge, none of the above has yet appeared in print.
