Sud is a veteran journalist who frequently writes on Urdu literary subjects in Delhi newspapers. He had earlier published two small books, one on Ghalib (ETERNAL FLAME: ASPECTS OF GHALIB'S LIFE AND WORKS) and the other on Iqbal (IQBAL AND HIS POEMS: A REAPPRAISAL). The present book combines the two interests, though it has not been possible to find out if it also repeats the contents of the earlier works. The book is divided in two equal parts, each consisting of an introduction followed by translations of selected ghazals and poems. In the case of Ghalib, many ghazals have been abridged—some reduced to only one couplet; in the case of Iqbal, many poems have been shortened and in one instance a translation by V. G. Kiernan has been included. Mr. Sud's introductions are commonplace and his translations are no better. Examples: Ghalib: Compensate me, 0 God, for pleasures omitted if I'm to be punished for sins committed. Seeing her I become cheerful; she thinks the patient is well! Iqbal: Epilogue As I take leave, they all say: "I knew him, I knew him." None knew, however, whence I came, what I said, to whom. The book is well-produced. Typographical errors? Many. (C.M.N.} 116
