The Worlds of Muslim Imagination

edited and selected by Alamgir Hashmi

An anthology of modern and contemporary multilingual literature of the Islamic countries. An increasing interest in the socio-political and cultural study of the 'Islamic World' should make a knowledge of its imaginative literature essential curriculum. Islamic countries, which emerged from Western colonialism not too long ago, yet have their cultures rooted in an older civilization and a proud literary heritage. The writings generally reflect an exciting use of tradition with modernity and myth as experienced in contemporary reality; a humane concern with individual lives and social circumstance, and with personal values in a changing world. Several outstanding authors are represented. These Muslim creative voices are distinctive, and whether their medium is Swahili. French, Urdu, Arabic. Turkish, Persian, English, Punjabi, Bengali, or Malay, they indicate the presence of (and allow us into) rich, diverse, and significant imaginative worlds. The book also contains critical essays by Afro-Asian and Western scholars. It is, indeed, the first-ever anthology of its kind published in any language, anywhere.
