Computer Software for Urdu

During the past decade a number of people have tried to produce computer software that can generate Urdu fonts. The results have been mixed, mainly due to the fact that Urdu-wallas still prefer nasta'IFq over nasx. In the following pages we give information about some of these programs and samples of their outputs. The list is by no means complete. We urge our readers to send us information about other programs that they may know of.

One outfit engaged in developing an Urdu font for the Macintosh is Ecological Linguistics (P.O. Box 15156, Washington, D.C., 20003). They have already developed fonts for Arabic and a number of Indian languages.

Gulf Data, Inc., has produced software for Arabic and Persian fonts for IBM machines. They are also interested in preparing a program for Urdu. Address: 9015 Fulbright Avenue; Chatsworth, CA 91311. Phone: (213) 998-0922.

Jeraisy Computer Services has produced Arabic ROM for Macintosh Plus computers. Their machines have the capacity for developing Urdu fonts. Address:

P.O. Box 317; Riyadh 11411; Saudi Arabia. They have recently started doing business in Pakistan.
