about meaning in Europe and America. Alan Kennedy in his paper gives us a rereading of Marquez along deconstructionist lines. And Manabendra Ban-dyopadhyay presents a more specific introduction to Marquez through his analysis of the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold.
We have chosen to give so much space to Marquez and Latin America taking into account the ignorance about Third World writing generally in our country, with a view to drawing attention to creativity in the Third World. That an Indian institution organised a national seminar on Marquez and Latin America is an exciting development from this Journal's point of view. It is not, let us hasten to add, a case of regionalism. It is merely a recognition of the areas which have remained largely unexplored in this country. Perhaps we would understand some of our problems, the questions some of our writers are trying to answer, if we looked a little more closely at the Third World experience. Abhinavagupta or Bharata are not adequate pointers to what our writers are trying to do. At any rate we need other perspectives as well. This small and undoubtedly far from adequate collection of papers may give us some.
