It is a pity that Mr. Coulson bases his translation on PischePs edition (1877) ot the Bengali recension of the text, although he found it unsatisfactory, The curious reader will find the problem of recensions discussed at length by Dr. V. Raghavan in his preface to the Sahitya Akademi edition of the play. There he indicates that the Bengali and Kashmiri recensions are inflated by the addition of inferior and repetitive material and adversely criticised by many scholars. Unfortunately the task of producing a critical edition of the great classic has been lett incomplete by the Akademi.
