This is sensitivg and moving, but it is also clear that the moment ofcentrality has passed — and the eloquence of the hope expressed in the last lines cannot conceal its intense fragility.

Notes & References

0. This paper was first presented at the Symposium on "the Indian Struggle for Freedom, 1945-47", held at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi, from 13-17 February 1984. The present version of the paper has benefitted in important respects from the discussions with colleagues at this Symposium and at the later Symposium on "System, Structure, Discourse" organised by the Department of Sociology, Delhi University, from 5 to 7 March 1984. For the inadequacies that remain, however, I alone must take responsibility.
