PLANNING

We talked it over, covered all the ground, Retained a sense of life with pots of beer, Smoked, slapped each other on the back and round A cheerful fire laughed away our fear«

Then we set to work as we had planned,

Not for us the dream, the dark illusion,

Relying only on the skilful hand

To guard us from an abstract love's diffusion.

We knew exactly what to do and how, Held our own against the thieves of time, Prepared to start again, revise the vow Should any concrete detail fail to rhyme.

We could not figure what it is went wrong;

Harmonised the impulse with the general tone, Allowed for everything, except a long Arresting arm, the Unseen, the Unknown.
