THE REVOLUTIONARY TRADITION OF THE MAY DAY POINTS AT THE LIBERATION OF THE WORKING CLASS

The 1st of May is the May Day. The tatters of the exploited and humiliated working millions became blood-bathed flags for the toiling masses ofthe.world. The heart-beat of internationalism was sounded by the working class on that day. That internationalism and universal fraternity have spread far and wide throughout the world. Sharing this revolutionary consciousness, the Left Front Government elected by the working people of West Bengal has continuously been trying to translate the hopes and desires of the common people into reality. In spite of limited powers, the Left Front Government has taken all possible steps to promote the democratic rights and improve the political and economic conditions of the working class.

The Left Front Government has been able to restore all the political, economic and democratic rights that were taken away during the h6rrible days of the Emergency. The policy adopted by the Labour Department of the Government now envisages qualitative changes. As a result, in the matter of realising the demands of the working people or of helping their democratic struggle, the Left Front Government has called all its might into play. It has been possible to ensure trade union rights and stop undesirable interference in struggles by the anti-socials and the police. The Labour Department has been making continual efforts to arrive at settlements of the industrial disputes through bipartite and tripartite discussions. The introduction of minimum wages for workers, as well as the implementation of the special housing projects, educational^, medical and employment projects are gradually turning into reality. The Left Front Government declares its promise of the May Day that with the co-operarion 6fthe struggling people of West Bengal the Left Front Government will succeed in implementing those projects.

The Left Front Government is determined to protect the human, democratic, political and economic rights of the people of West Bengal like the most coveted treasure.

All this is because the Left Front Government is a weapon in the struggle of the common people.
