17 Saiyid Nurul Hasan, Thoughts on Agrarian Relations in Mughal India, People's Publishing House, New Delhi 1973. This 'little book' was based on a tape-recording of the talks the author gave at the Patna University in April 1971. The breezy conclusion sums up the quality and spirit of the book: "Could this system have created conditions for its own regeneration? I do not think that my answer would be based on sound logic or on a great deal of facts. But if one is permitted to make an observation in the natiire of an obiter dictum, then I would say. 'Yes it was capable.' But that capability was not within the framework of the system as it had existed. It appears to me that the decay of the system had already started, and the process of this decline would have necessarily led to the overthrow of the system and to the emergence of something different. It is not essential that it would have only been overthrown by an external power." (p 40)

The main observation was that the applicant should "associate an engineer at suitable stages for the project since much of it is concerned with the building techniques and constructional problems." A supplementary observation was that the title of the project should be reworded as "The History of Building Techniques and Structural Elements of the Temples of India." (Minutes of the Joint Session of the Tenth Meeting of the Research Projects Committee, First Meeting of the Publications Committee and Second Meeting of the Translation Committee, held on June 22, 1973 at 35 Feroz^shah Road.)
