research in the frontier areas of physics and also outline the prospect of future developments.

Where are we in search of the ultimate building blocks of matter, quark theory? What is the state of research in unifying quantum mechanics and relativity theory? Can we have grand unified theories—combining gravity, weak and strong nuclear forces and electro-magnetic force? What caused the 'Big Bang' and what happened in the first 10-30 seconds after the Big Bang ? Are there unseen dimensions of space? What are self-organising systems? These and some other interesting questions relating to the state of the art in physical sciences are dealt with in this volume.

Although it has not been possible to avoid mathematics and technical jargon altogether in very many articles, the volume as a whole retains readability for students of physics, philosophy of science and all those interested in deepening their understanding of the process of the breakdown of the entrenched beliefs about the nature of the physical world.
