NOTES AND REFERENCES

1. Malayalam is the language of Kerala, the state with the highest literacy rate in India. Based on 1981 statistics, the literacy level for women in Kerala is 88 percent of the rate for men (65.7 and 75.3 percent respectively), whereas in India as a whole it is about half that of men (24.8 and 46.9 percent).
