All this however only underscores the immense task that devolves on the left today where it must carry forward the people's struggle for emancipation, where it must rebuff imperialist attempts at recolonising our economy and where it must stand rock-solid in defence of secularism whose preservation and deepening would have multiplier effects on the whole South Asian region that is currently threatened with "Talibanisation". The left can derive consolation from the fact that behind the storm clouds that have gathered round us, a new light is beginning to emerge which is visible along a whole stretch from Russia to South East Asia.
