We had tried to explore theoretically in what way Absolute Rent paid by

petty producers in India can also constitute a barrier to the expansion of

capitalist production in a paper written in 1979 and published as U. Patnaik

'Classical Theory of Rent and its Application to India with some thoughts

on Sharecropping' in The Journal of Peasant Studies Oct. 1983 also included

in my forthcoming book The Long Transition : Essays in Political Economy

(Tulika Delhi, 1999).
