the last essay being that of S.S. Bal, "Towards the Punjab-speaking State." And this lends a certain amount of topicality to the volume.

One's only regret is that cultural aspects, like Punjabi literature, and Sikh painting, are not adequately covered, But all in all, it is a book no serious student of Sikh history can do without. And the production, with a good bibliography at the end, is excellent.
