BOOK REVIEWS 79 only too evident that a government, which explicitly requires scientists to ignore the socio-economic system and the potentialities open for change (thereby isolating them from the struggles of the people which reflect the real forces pressing for change) cannot provide these scientists with the opportunity either to engage in such analyses or to make any worthwhile contribution to the social problems that confront Indian science today.
