Nevertheless, the book published under the Signpost: Issues that Matter series by Left Word Books is a valuable contribution to the recent studies on Hindu nationalism, such as those by Christophe Jaffrelot (1996), Thomas Blom Hansen (1999) and Partha Ghosh (1999). It is an incisive and thematic discussion of the Sangh parivar politics which takes the reader from the outlook and policies of the RSS, to its partnership with the imperialists, the recent and selective appropriation of Gandhi, a description of the front organisations of Sangh, to the demolition of the Babri mosque and the recent programme of assault on Christians. The author's comments on the politics of the Sangh parivar that were published in The Statesman, Frontline and Imprint, form the main body of contents of the book. These comments are woven together in a continuous narrative enriched by his experience as a lawyer and a keen analyst of Indian politics.
