CASTE PREJUDICE 47

between Backward and Harijan in PQ. In PSEG and PQ, areas Backwards seem to entertain a stronger belief in the caste system than Harijans.

A glance at the aggregate mean scores of caste prejudice of urban and rural students shows the rural subjects scoring higher. When students from the rural area are compared with those of their respective castes in the towns in regard to total caste-prejudice scores, the following CRs emerged: Brahmins 2.35; Rajputs 3.20; Kayasthas 1.86; Vaisyas 2.90; Backwards 1.91; and Harijans 0.81. The significant CRs are for Brahmins (Z.05), Rajputs (Z.01), and Vaisyas (Z.01). These indicate that in the urban areas, changes have taken place in the attitudes of Brahmin, Rajput, and Vaisya students towards the caste system.

Summing Up

The following conclusions may be drawn from these findings:

1 Subjects from both urban and rural settings vary in their caste prejudice due to difference in caste affiliation.

2 The subjects of higher caste-groups are more caste prejudiced compared to low caste-groups.

3 In the countryside, the intensity of caste prejudice is greater than in the towns.

4 Caste prejudice is increasing in the area of ^education, employment and inhabitation5.
