St^warts ?0 Srtll Chowdhuri, Hemanta Mukherjce, and so on joined the bourgeois bandwagon and started composing music meant to keep the people away from the awareness of the social realty. Only in some films, of later years was; any notable achievement witnessed. This medium., being comparatively new to India, was influenced by the creations of the Rusriaa and European ^New, Wave' film makers. «However, in spite of some socially cpnscious works the general trend was sin^ilar to th^t of the theatre. Lack of clear political convictions did not allow this movement to become a positive force as expected earlier. Thtrfdtawteck also led to the failure of these socially conscious film iqakers^in communicating thp^ ideas to the vast majority Of the people. * ^ ^

Conclusion

Thus the promise of the 1940's had practically remained unfulfilled, as far as the left cultural movement was concerned. However, it

movement, particularly the^theatre movement,made its impact on the cultural life of West Bengal. It is the primary responsibility of a revolutionary working-class party to sum up all the achievements and failures on the 'cuhural front and to arrive M a concrete programme fot cultural actioft. ^Jte ctea^ed1 political ^situation in (his stasis opening up new vistas of promise.
