struggles in defence of its daily interests. The analysis at best remains within the bounds of bourgeois politics.

The study is in respect of the Textile Workers Union (TWU) the most dominant among the four workers' organisations in the textile industry in Coimbatore region. This industry is known for its militant unionism since the late 30's. After a brief socio-economic description of the workers and employers in the industry the author traces the historical evolution of the trade union movement in Goimbatore. A detailed account of the organisation and functioning of the TWU then follows. It gives us interesting insights into the daily problems regarding union functioning, the factors affecting choice of union and membership involvement in the union. There are some descriptions ofindustrial disputes and the very human, practical problems which the leadership and rank and file workers face in the course of their struggles. Finally, he deals with the political involvement of the TWU with the Praja Socialist Party and the pattern of leadership which facilitates union-member relationship. Altogether a very readable book.
