10 In 1966 about 600,000 hectares were separated from this sector and given out to cooperatives of former freedom fighters (Cooperatives des Anciens Moudjahedine).

21 Abandoned French industrial and service enterprises were also placed under the direction of workers' committees, but this "autogestion industrielle" never received much attention or support from the government. In fact, this section consisted mainly of small workshops with only a few workers, without capital reserves and with few economic prospects. Most of them were sold to private Algerian entrepreneurs in later years. Big enterprises were nationalised only in later years and were never placed under a system of workers' self-management. Since the early 1970s there is a legalised system of workers* committees in Algerian State-owned industries, but these committees have only advisory and control functions and do not participate actively in decision-making.

aa The idea of the pure peasant revolution as opposed to the cojcrupted nationalism of the urban bourgeoisie was popularised by Fanon.
