EISENSTEIN AND THE POTEMKIN REVOLUTION 61

'Potemkin5 moves on undaunted. Here is Eisenstein's tribute to the developments in technology of which he was a keen student all his life. The rhythm which he creates with the needles of the pressure gauges, the searchlights, the smoke pouring out of the funn els, the pistons and the engines is something unforgettable.

The tension mounts as the squadron is sighted and approaches nearer. The cannons are loaded and the muzzles are aimed and they wait. The squadron signals friendship and all the sailors wave their caps in joy. Aerial shots show the group formation. Great waves are caused by the passage of the battleship. The tall prow of the rebellious battleship moves victoriously onwards over the camera.

We see, therefore, that such a structure presents maximum possibility for ajn open ended film. The responsibility of such an experience is interiorized with the audience— building a completely new form of cinematography; the realization of revolution in the general history of culture, building a synthesis of science, art and class militancy.
