अंगारी चतुर्थी or अंगारी चौथ (p. 007) [ aṅgārī caturthī or aṅgārī cautha ] f See अंगारकी.

इनामचौथाई (p. 078) [ ināmacauthāī ] f One-fourth of the produce of an इनाम (as paid into the Government &c.)

उभीचौथ (p. 104) [ ubhīcautha ] f or -चतुर्थी f The fourth lunar day of each dark fortnight. So termed by such as have, on this day, a व्रत or observance, in honor of Ganpati, of being upon their legs from sunrise to moonrise.

चौथ (p. 294) [ cautha ] f (चतुर्थी S) The fourth lunar day. चौथी- चा चंद्र पाहणें (To see the fourth-day-moon.) To be visited with some accusation or affliction. (The moon of this date, if looked upon or casually seen, brings calamity.) 2 C In weighing butter. A weight of forty-eight शिवराई. 3 (For चौथाई) An assignment equal, nominally, to one-fourth of the तनखा, but, generally, to about one-fourth of the Government-collections, obtained from the Muhammadan territories by the Maráṭhás. The Maráṭhás collected it, and divided it as follows. One-fourth, or twenty-five per cent., was appropriated by the head of the Maráṭhá state, and was called राजबाबती; from the remainder, termed मोकासा, there was deducted a sum equal to six per cent. (साहोत्रा) of the whole चौथ, and this was assigned to the पंतसचिव. The remainder, equal to sixty-nine per cent. of the चौथ, termed ऐनमो- कासा, was partitioned, on certain conditions, among the Sirdars. In some districts there was, besides the साहोत्रा a sum equal to three per cent. on the whole चौथ deducted from the मोकासा, and named नाडगौंडा. Very numerous subdivisions of the चौथ have since been made.

चौथभरणी (p. 294) [ cauthabharaṇī ] f That lunar day (the 3rd, 4th, or 5th) of भाद्रपदवद्य, on which the moon is in her mansion भरणी: also the श्राद्ध celebrated on this day to the manes of such as died during the twelve months preceding.

चौथरा (p. 294) [ cautharā ] sometimes चौत्रा m A quadrangular terrace; any raised square or oblong.

चौथल (p. 294) [ cauthala ] f R A fourth (of the produce of a field). 2 A way of renting land; the landlord takes onefourth as rent, and leaves three-fourths to the tenant.

चौथाई (p. 294) [ cauthāī ] f A fourth part, a quarter.

चौथाईअमल (p. 294) [ cauthāīamala ] m The right to receive one-fourth of the revenue (of a particular province or tract).

दगडी चौथ (p. 399) [ dagaḍī cautha ] f A term for गणेशचतुर्थी. (From a silly practice of throwing stones by persons seeing the fourth day moon.)

भरणचौथ (p. 603) [ bharaṇacautha ] f Commonly चौथभरणी.

संकष्टचतुर्थी, संकष्टी चौथ, संकष्टी (p. 801) [ saṅkaṣṭacaturthī, saṅkaṣṭī cautha, saṅkaṣṭī ] f The fourth lunar day of every dark fortnight. It continues until moonrise. Ceremonies are performed on it for the averting of difficulties and troubles. This day is contrad. from विनायकी चतुर्थी or -चौथ, and both days are sacred to Gan̤esh.
