Founded by Itihasacharya Rajawade and Tatyasaheb Mehendale in 1920 as a depository for miscellaneous historical papers collected by Rajawade, BISM remains one of the primary archives of Marathi historical materials. Its quarterly journal, Bharat Itihas Samshodhak Mandal Traimasik, began publication in 1920 under the editorship of Datto Waman Potdhar and G. N. Mujumdar.
