This library was determined to have a significant collection of Assamese language materials when the National Bibliography of Indian Literature was compiled in the mid-twentieth century. Listed in the Survey of Manuscripts in India.The K. K. Handiqui Library was established to cater to the needs of the students, teachers and research scholars of the University. It not only helps in supporting the classroom instructional programmes of the University, but also unfolds the horizon of knowledge in regard to the different research programmes carried out by the University.Our mission is to set high standards of excellence in the preservatioin of knowledge and serve as an effective instrument of development and change for the state of Assam and the rest of the country by passing on faithfully and comprehensively the cultural, scientific and technological experiances of mankind accumulated over the millennia, thereby ensuring the continuity and advancemet of human civilization.

History of the Library
The Gauhati University Library started its functioning in 1948 at Chandmari (now known as old University Colony) and then shifted to Room No.1 of the Arts building and accommodated in the present building in 1962. In 1982 the Gauhati University Library was renamed as K. K. Handiqui Library after the death of its first Vice Chancellor Professor K. K. Handiqui an Orientalist of world fame.

Archival Cell
The K. K. Handiqui Library, GU has about 4500 valuavle manuscripts written on Sachipat, ula pat and paper and these manuscripts have been preserved in the manuscript section of the Archival cell of the Library.The Post-Graduate students of the Assamese Department, GU, Post Graduate Correspondance School, GHU, and other institutions and research scholars of various disciplines outside Gauhati University use these manuscripts.The following persons/Institutions have donated their manuscripts to the K.
