History
The directorate of Archives and Libraries was established in 1951, as sub-ordinate office of the Ministry of Education. The department was bifurcated on 8th December 1973, which gave birth to two separate departments. In 1977, the subject of archives was allotted to newly created Culture Division. Later, on 9th January 1997 the National Archives of Pakistan was attached with the Cabinet Division.

Organization
The NAP is headed by a Director General (BPS-20). There is one Director (BPS-19). three Deputy Directors (BPS-18) and one hundred and twenty-four para professional/Professional staff to undertake record management, Conservation, Reprography and Administration/Accounts. Organizational chart is given in the end pages. NAP has 4 basic technical units and one Administration & Account Sections:ul>
