This library was determined to have a significant collection of Konkani language materials when the National Bibliography of Indian Literature was compiled in the mid-twentieth century. Listed in the Survey of Manuscripts in India.The library was established in 1832 as a depository library of colonial Goa. It started functioning as the State Central Library after the liberation of Goa in 1961 with the aid of the State Government. The library has the single largest holding in the entire province. Though within the fold of the state government, the library at present has very limited facitilities for preservation. In the early 2000s they began preparing an electronic catalogue but the work stalled midway for technical reasons.
