of imprisonment up to five year, and of fine to the extent of Re. too ;
but sentences of imprisonment for more than two years and of fine
exceeding Rs. 5, require the confirmation of the Commissioner.
Heinous offences calling for heavier punishment are dealt with by the
Political Agent, Chhattfegarh Feudatories, who exercises the powers of
a District Magistrate and Assistant Sessions judge ; the Commissioner
cupiea the position of a Sessions Court in respect of such cases, while
the functions of a High Court are vested in the Chief Commissioner.
The revenue of the State from all source, n 1904-6 was I".
x,t6,ooo, of which Rs. So,- was denvedfrom land, Ra. x
from excise, and Its. 7,000 from forest. The expenditure in the same
year s Rs. 1 ,05,00 including Rs. o spent o administration,
Rs. 35aooo on domestic charges, and Rs. 6,0oo on public works.
The State maintains 199 miles of roads. The current revenue demand
is Its. 6o,00o per an collected through lease-holders, called
lhehad,irs, with whe, ntl e villages are settled. The latter fix and
collect the assessment payable by each cultivator in the village, and
the amount is not changed during the term of the settlement. The
Mehadars have no rights beyond that period ; but the lease is generally
wed with the old thehadjr, and a son generally succeeds his father,
though no hereditary rights are recognized. The S- maintain.,
a police force of to officers and 35 men, and there is also a body of
village police who receive a monthly salary. There is a jail with accom-
modation for 1 t prisoners at JASNPURNACAR, where the State also
maintains a dispensary at which t,ooo patients were treated in rgo4-5.
In the same year 6,00. persons were successfully vaccinated. In 19oz
only 86t persons could read and write; but some new schools have
been opened by the State since that time, and in rgo4-5 there were 15
schools with an attendance of 300 pupils.
Jashpurnagar (or Jagdispur).-Headquarters of the Jashpur State,
Central Provinces, situated in 22° 53′ N. and 84° 8′ E Population
(x901), x,654. It contains the residence of the chief, a dispensary;
and a jail.
jaso(Jasso).-A petty salad State in the Beghelkhand Political
Charge of the Central India Agency, lying between 24° 20′ and
24° 34′ N. and 80° 28′ and 80° 40′ E., with an area of about 72 square
miles. It is bounded on the north, east, and south by the Nagod
State, and on the west by the Ajaigarh State. The population in igor
s 7,zog. The jagirddr is a Bundcla RAjput descended from
Chhatarsal, founder of the Pan,& State. On the death of Chhatar-
