Dewar's (op.dt: 14) estimate in 1906 shows that out of 75% of the total population, 27% of the population were farm servants and field labourers and 71 % as proprietors and tenants. Although he does not mention the percentage of tenants it is assumed that it must be very high since the landlords at that time leased out most of their land to keep the tenants attabhed for various forms of exploitation.
