5. The data on bed strength in the private and voluntary sector published by the CBHI are under-estimates. During 1986-87, the CBHI reported a total bed strength of 14,309 in the private sector for Kerala. During the same year a survey by the KSSP reported 35,317 beds while the Bureau of Economics and Statistics reported 36,479 beds. Such large differences are also seen in Andhra Pradesh. For a detailed discussion of the inadequacies of the data base on the private sector see Baru, Rama V., "Some Aspects of the Private Sector in Medical Care and its Interrelationship with the Private Sector: A Study of Hyderabad-Secunderabad", Unpublished Ph.D. thesis, CSMCH, JNU, 1993.
