Colonialism in Action: Trade, Development and Dependence in Late Colonial India

Debdas Banerjee

This book attempts to relate the structure of India's foreign trade with changes in the domestic conditions of production and consequent development or underdevelopment, of the internal market. It delves into how institutions of colonial oppression completely eclipsed all modernising projects for an industrial, capitalist economy. In essence, it helps provide a better grasp of what is meant by Colonialism in Action. ps 225 00

Hill Politics in Northeast India

SKChaube

The book has updated the story of political evolution of the hills of northeast India highlighting the emergence of autonomies in the region. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, the region has grown from ethnocentric tribal organisations to territorial autonomy structures. This is led by a profound process of change in all spheres of life and society. Notwithstanding the incidence of violence and some of the secessionist overtones, the book is optimistic of the future. Individually, each turbulence is transient and can be seen as a part of an overall trend towards democratic politics. £s 130 Q0
