The author of this dictionary, Mr. Inam Ullah, of village Bahrein, in District Swat of the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan holds the B.Sc., B.Ed., and M.A. (English Literature) degrees, and currently works as a high school teacher in village Kedam, District Swat. He has been working on the study and documentation of his native language, Torwali, for many years. He first became interested in working on Torwali when, at the University of Sindh (Jamshoro) he read the written material available on Torwali, mainly that of George Grierson in the Linguistic Survey of India, volume 8, part II, and in a short monograph, Torwali; an account of a Dardic language of the Swat Kohistan (1929). Finding the available literature on Torwali very sparse and incomplete, and containing many errors, he decided to work on writing descriptive and lexicographical material for his language. In the initial stages of his work he was encouraged and guided by Dr. Joan Baart, a Dutch linguist affiliated with the Summer Institute of Linguistics, who at that time was working on the neighboring Kalami Kohistani language. Mr. Inamullah is the author of the following recent publication:

Inam Ullah. 2004. "Lexical Database of the Torwali Dictionary", paper presented at the Asia Lexicography Conference, Chiangmai, Thailand, 24-26 May, 2004.

Work on the Web presentation of Inam Ullah's dictionary was funded as a project by the Consortium for Language Teaching and Learning under a grant titled "Digital Dictionaries for Less Commonly Taught Languages of Pakistan". The sound recordings were made at the radio recording studio of the Allama Iqbal Open University in Islamabad, for which the planners and executors of the project are extremely grateful. The entry words and example sentences were recorded on a TASCAM DA-P1 digital audio tape recorder purchased with Consortium funding for this project, and maintained with the help of the American Institute of Pakistan Studies.
